Definition

Dealing with Complexity and Ambiguity entails being able to identify uncertain, complex and ambiguous situations, recognise when an issue is complicated v/s when it is complex, and most importantly to not be overwhelmed when faced with complex and or ambiguous situations but to adapt and respond to the situation with a positive attitude and flexible approach.

What does it mean when we are able to deal with complex and ambiguous situations? how do we recognize those who can?

Well, they will exhibit the following indicators

  • Able to be calm and confident. They help the people around them, their teams, colleagues be calm and deal with ambiguous situations.
  • They will identify the root cause of the problem quickly
  • They ask questions to evoke thought process, even when answers are not available.
  • Convey ambiguous and complex information with as much clarity as possible.
  • Assess different possible outcomes and plan for different scenarios and possible results quickly. They are not deterred with outcomes that do not match expectations.
  • Respond to the changing nature of the situation with the required resources.
  • Are willing to work and change according to evolving nature of outcomes
  • Work on an unclear goal and unpredictable outcome with energy and a positive attitude.

So a word of caution do not make this list a standard, but use it as a guide to recognize your own strengths and weaknesses.

In the past decades the world has seen tremendous shifts, in the ways business is done, marketing, strategies new innovations. Not only that we saw the uprooting of the entire structure of our traditional models and rebuilt it in functional ways. It showed us we can deal with uncertainties better than we believed if we are willing to change. In this module we will go through the following to help us learn, deal with complex, ambiguous situations and embrace them as challenges.

  • Importance of knowing how to deal with volatility, uncertainty, etc.
  • Identifying complex and ambiguous situations
  • Difference between complicated (predictable) and complex situations.
  • Communication during uncertainty
  • Building alternate solutions and paths.
  • Dealing with uncertainty.
  • Accountability – making a decision from a deluge of information, and most of the times, incomplete information, and sticking to it

We hope the module will be useful in providing the tools required to deal with complex situations.

All the best!
