Clarity of thought is a state of mind where we are more focused and our perception is clear. It is an essential aspect of leadership as good clarity of thought results in recognizing, understanding and organizing our work in a better and more impactful manner.

Definition:

The ability to apply relevant theories and information in assessing interlinkages among variables, action and their consequences in order to achieve a clear understanding of the matter/issue at hand, without any confusion

The ability to focus on the issue at hand to the exclusion of everything else

The ability to shift through all the information presented or gathered, between relevant and otherwise, to enquire into a situation, sustaining an investigation and coming up with alternatives

You may find the following behavioural indicators in people who have good clarity of thought:

  • They actively engage in acquiring necessary domain knowledge and information to better understand the subject matter and form clear opinions
  • They actively enquire into situations when ideas are foggy or not meeting the goals.
  • They do not hesitate to ask the question “Why”, multiple times to identify the root cause
  • They take time to reflect on the possible outcomes and alternatives quickly
  • They don’t get bogged down by social pressure to constantly bombard with information

Three steps are important if one aspires to develop good clarity of thought

Step 1: Visualizing the outcome: People with good clarity of thought usually are good at visualizing the outcome. To understand what is needed, they are aware that the problem or the situation has to be understood until a point that the desired outcome becomes clear.

Step 2: Knowing the steps from current position to target position: Often people with good clarity of thought keep asking themselves and others if they are clear on what is needed. They display greater self-awareness in terms of knowing where do they stand and when do they need to go

Step 3: The “Why” behind each step: Questions are a powerful means of gaining better clarity over an idea or a thought. “Why” is a powerful question and forced everyone to think about the purpose. We shall discussion more about questions in the upcoming section.
